Community Day Recap
Posted on 24 April 2017
On Saturday April 22nd, the CARE Program had its first service day out in the community. As the person in charge of running that day, I can tell you first hand that it would not have been successful without the help of YXU, their mission, and their willing and dedicated volunteers. Working with them throughout the month of April has been an experience unlike any other, and for a few reasons.
The first reason is that YXU has created an environment where people and where leaders can thrive. There is a lot of bad in the world, but to find a group of people willing to help promote the good and spread positivity no matter the cause is remarkable. The second reason is that they have built their YXU community by staying true to their mission, and you learn that in the first minute of talking with any one of the YXU Representatives. They don’t just wear cool shirts, they bring people together to build communities; they don’t just say “leave your mark”, they actively work to do just that.
So yes, I could go on and on about how thankful I am to YXU for believing in the CARE Program and our mission and I could compliment them for hours, but I think there is something more important to learn from all of this, and YXU reminds us of it each and every day:
“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” –Margaret Mead
Being a good leader doesn’t have to mean you run for office or you have CEO next to your name; sometimes, being a good leader means you go out on a Saturday morning and help clean up the yard of someone who is unable to do it for themselves. If you stay thoughtful and committed to your beliefs and values, it seems as though being a good leader will come out of that in its own way, and I learned that from being part of the YXU Community this month. I hope to leave my mark both personally and through my work with the CARE Program. I am so happy to have been able to join YXU, this thoughtful group of committed citizens, to work on showing we care and leaving our mark out in the community. John C. Maxwell wrote: “Leaders become great not because of their power, but because of their ability to empower others”. Thank you YXU, you have built a community of empowerment in a world that needs it and I am so happy to have gotten to play a role in carrying out that mission.
Keep on leaving your mark, and I plan to do the same!
