Leader of the Month: Alicia Horton
Posted on 01 December 2017
My name is Alicia Horton and I am the Executive Director at Thrive DC, a homeless services organization serving over 2,000 individuals per year in Washington, DC. We offer everything a person needs to stay healthy: meals, shower, laundry, emergency clothing, and services to help people take steps towards their independence: job training, case management, and therapeutic activities.
I am so excited to share my experience and Thrive DC’s work over the next month. Many thanks to everyone at YXU for all of their support and for allowing me to tell you more about what I do and how we can all benefit from being active in our communities!
First, I’ll start with a little bit about me: I came to Thrive DC 8 years ago after working in community mobilization at the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence. I got my BA from Howard U, MPH from Tulane, and finally a JD from Catholic U. I came from a community-oriented DC family (of many doctors, which explains the MPH), so you could say organizing and activism is in my DNA.
But it wasn’t until I came to Thrive DC that I realized how essential the sense of community and belonging is to all of our clients. It’s what makes Thrive DC unique and it’s certainly inspires me every day. We take time to get to know our clients, our volunteers, and our constituents; we listen to their stories about how they came to us and we try to make their experience a little better. We let them get to know us and build mutual trust – all while offering essential services to get back on their feet.
You’d be amazed what you can learn from a person in just a brief conversation. So the next time you see someone on the street, don’t just walk past – take a minute or two to acknowledge them. And if you’re in the DC area, let them know that Thrive DC can help. You don’t need 3 advanced degrees to do that!
And speaking of building communities, I’m so happy to partner with YXU this month. They’ll be donating 10% of all apparel sales to Thrive DC!
