Spartan Steps-up for Haiti
Posted on 24 October 2016
YXU has partnered up with Gabe Augustin to help support his efforts to raise funds for Hurricane Matthew relief efforts in Haiti. We sat down with Gabe to understand his journey to developing into a strong leader in his community on campus at Michigan State University.
We will be featuring Gabe’s shirt on our site to raise funds for Project Medishare for Haiti from 10/24 until 10/31. 100% of profits from the sales of these shirts will be invested back into the Haitian community through Gabe’s efforts.
What is your connection with Haiti?
I was born and raised in Saginaw, Michigan. Both my parents came from Haiti when they were 13 years old in order to follow their dreams of obtaining a better life for themselves as well as their families. I am the youngest of 3 boys. My father Gerald Augustin is a 34-year anesthesiologist, and my mother Carine Augustin is a registered nurse of 33 years.
How was the idea of serving others instilled in you, and what are your plans to build on this in the future?
In the near future I hope to apply to medical school in order to play an even bigger role in helping the lives of the sick and less fortunate. Growing up with two parents within the medical field, I have always felt the need to help those who are less fortunate. My parents have been able to provide everything I could ask for and I intend to do the same for my kids and the [less fortunate] that I come in contact with.
What experiences have you had to expose you to the community in Haiti?
I visited Haiti in the 5th grade and had the opportunity to witness how so many of the nation’s civilians struggle for daily basic needs such as food, water, and shelter it was at that moment, I knew that when I grew up I would make an effort to do everything in my power to help aid and comfort those struggling in Haiti. I have many family members who live in Haiti, including my grandparents. Over 800 lives were lost in Haiti after Hurricane Matthews leaving many families heartbroken and dealing with even more hardship in their lives.
How do you think this project relates to YXU’s mission to build leaders and strengthen communities?
The goal of this project is to inspire others to lend a hand in aiding towards the relief efforts in Haiti. I believe that this project connects with YXU lifestyle because this is a great opportunity for not only myself but for everyone to join in a cause that will help the lives of those struggling in Haiti after the devastating destruction caused by Hurricane Matthews.
What has motivated you to be a leader in your community?
I believe that every human should feel the need to help the less fortunate, especially in times of heartache and disaster. One of my life goals is to not only to aid in the betterment of the life’s of those struggling within Haiti but also encourage others to give back to the less fortunate, even if the less fortunate happens to be someone that they might not know.
What are your personal plans for the future?
My personal plan for the future is to become a successful doctor by aiding in the betterment of individual health care, and leaving an impact on the patient and their family. One of my life goals is to not only to aid in the betterment of the life’s of those struggling within Haiti but also encourage others to give back to the less fortunate, even if the less fortunate happens to be someone that they might not know.
